Looking for a Newborn photographer in Geneva/Nyon but not sure which style is right for you?

Let me help!

Before choosing a photographer for your little one’s first photos, it’s good to know that there are two main styles of Newborn photography. I used to do both before moving to Switzerland, but now I focus mainly on lifestyle Newborn photography—and I’d love to tell you why! Keep reading to learn more.

All the images in this blog are mine, and I kindly ask that they not be copied or shared. They are copyrighted. 😊

Posed Newborn

Some photographers specialize in just one style, while others may shoot a variety. In this article, I’ll go over the two genres I offer: In-Studio Posed or Lifestyle whether you live in Nyon, Rolle, Morges, Lausanne or Geneva I'll come to your home.

Studio

Generally, studio photography focuses on posed newborn sessions. This gives the photographer full creative control, including the use of artificial lighting and carefully arranged setups. With this style, you’ll get beautifully posed images of your baby sleeping peacefully, often wrapped up and surrounded by props.

These sessions usually take around three hours, as you’ll need time for feedings, soothing your baby to sleep, and taking breaks as needed. Posed newborn photography is typically done within the first 12 days after birth, as babies at this stage tend to sleep more deeply and are less likely to startle when moved. After this period, babies are often more alert, cry more easily, and may develop newborn acne, which can make posing trickier.

It’s also good to know that this style is mainly focused on solo portraits of your baby. If this is the look you love, it’s best to book your session at least 2–3 months in advance to secure a spot with your preferred photographer. I do not do these types of photoshoots anymore. I currently do lifestyle, please keep reading below to find out more and why.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle Newborn photography takes place in the comfort of your own home, whether is in Geneva, Rolle, Morges, Nyon or anywhere in Vaud, creating a relaxed and natural atmosphere. Unlike posed studio sessions, this style focuses on real moments and genuine love connections between your family and your new baby. It’s perfect for those who want to capture the love, warmth, and special bond that comes with welcoming a Newborn.

There are no stiff poses or elaborate props—just your baby, your family, and the beautiful moments you share. That said, we can also use your grandmothers knited blankets, a plush toy the grandparents or aunties gave them and even your pets are welcome into the session.

One of the biggest advantages of a lifestyle session is that the whole family can be involved—including siblings and even your pet! These sessions typically last around 1-2 -hours, but unlike posed photography, we don’t need to wait for your baby to fall asleep. Awake babies can be wonderfully curious, and I love capturing their tiny expressions and emerging personalities!

When to book a Lifestyle Newborn photoshoot?

Reserve your session by the end of your second trimester. However, give yourself plenty of time before that to research the different types of newborn photography available and the photographers who offer them. This way, you’ll have already established a relationship with a few photographers of your choice and will be ready to reserve your session by the end of your second trimester.
